Managing Director: Steve Cumberlidge. |
Steve's comprehensive understanding of communications technology, computing and IT begins with training as a telecoms engineer with BT ...though at this time they are still known as GPO Telephones.
• 1974: a move into commercial broadcasting, joining Radio City (Sound of Merseyside) Ltd - one month before they begin transmissions - as a Sound Studio and Transmission Communications Engineer.
• 1981: fascination with the emerging technology of microprocessors sees him working as a freelance in the field of electronics and embedded assembly language.
This work continues through the 80's, providing clients with a broad range of solutions, including: • a portable ground-borne shock wave analyser for a major utility company. • a speech-generating line ID box used by ITV sport for the California Olympic Games.
• 1986: Steve joins the team at Kemitron Electronics. Here he designs battery-testing software and prototypes both the hardware and software of industrial control boards and PC-based data collection. Applications include the monitoring of early wind turbines and power station processes.
• 1988: having become familiar with emerging PC Network Technology while with Kemitron, Steve wins a contract with Shell Chemicals as a freelance IT and Networking Consultant. Here he leads the design, installation and subsequent support of the IT network for a large chemical plant, using both optical fibre and copper ethernet. In doing so, he masters many different IT system technologies, and gains particular experience in the requirements of these systems when operating in an industrial environment.
It is while involved in this work that he first uses Axis Cameras and Video Servers. He is quick to realise their potential. Given the unique cabling problems facing him in the installation and transmission of CCTV across so large and complex a site, the Axis products prove the ideal solution.
He goes on to develop a project to provide live video feeds from a number of cameras around the plant, using the site's existing IT LAN to transmit the images simultaneously to several different control rooms. This proves so successful that by early 2003 the plant boasts 22 cameras, with further installations in progress.
• 2003 Steve leaves Shell to pursue his own goals with CAMSERV, whose diverse roster of clients now includes Farms, Schools and Heritage sites. His cool-headed approach to problem-solving and breadth of experience are two of the many qualities that make his company uniquely able to tackle the most taxing installations and to satisfy any user requirement.
"Every job is unique," he says. "Some sites have little or no utility power; others require wireless WAN connections - you can never tell what's going to come up next. That's what makes the work so enjoyable - there's always a fresh challenge."
Married with one adult son, a cat, a dog and a recording studio, Steve's keen interests include amateur radio, live music ....and the occasional pint of Guinness.
